restic distinguishes repository structure checks from reading the backed-up data. The normal check command verifies consistency but does not read all pack-file contents to prove they are unmodified. A clean default result must not be described as a complete readback of the backup.

Adding --read-data reads all pack files. The documentation warns that this takes longer and may increase bandwidth costs. Plan it around repository size and storage charges; YNIX has not measured its runtime or provider-specific cost.

The --read-data-subset option can select a numbered group or a random percentage of pack files. Repeating a random percentage does not guarantee eventual coverage of every pack. If using numbered groups, track completed groups and remember that a changing repository needs ongoing checks.

Verdict: restic offers explicit integrity controls for users prepared to manage a checking schedule. Complement them with a restore of a chosen snapshot into a separate empty directory and open representative files. This review is based on documentation, not a recovery lab test, and awards no reliability score.
